Performance highlights
Mara has given thousands of concerts throughout Europe, Asia, the UK, Australia and Canada. Concert hall performances include such diverse venues as the Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room, London; Alte Oper Frankfurt; Australian Embassy, Brunei; the Palais de Beaux Arts, Brussels; Vredenburg Centrum, Utrecht; Ho Chi Minh City Conservatorium; Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, Shanghai Theatre Centre and Auckland Town Hall.
Outdoor venues have included Vancouver Folk Festival, WOMAD festivals in 5 countries, Olympic Plaza Calgary, Koprivshtitsa Festival (Bulgaria), Isola Tiberina Rome, Fairport Convention Reunion Cropredy (UK), the 2000 European Broadcasting Union Festival in the Czech Republic and the Taipei World Music Festival among many others.
Mara’s albums “Live in Europe” and “Ruino Vino” with her group Mara! won the Australian Recording Industry Awards (ARIA) for best Australian World/Folk/Traditional release of 2001 and 1996. In 1997 the Mara! CD “Sezoni" with Martenitsa Choir) was a nominee the ARIA awards and was released by Real World Records internationally in 1999. “Sorella" was an ARIA nominee in 2006.
Mara's theatre work includes:
- Musical director Meryl Tankard Company’s “Songs with Mara”. (7 Australian seasons 92-97, toured in Europe 1997)
- Consultant for Meryl Tankard’s “Chants de Marriage 2” for the Adelaide Festival.
- Musical director One Extra Company’s “People like Us”.
- Soloist Sydney Theatre Co.’s New Stages production “Portrait of an Invisible Man”.
- Conductor, composer and performer in Legs on the Wall/Mara!/Martenitsa collaboration “HomeLand” (Seasons for Sydney Olympics 2000, Brisbane Energex Festival 2000, Manchester Commonwealth Games Arts Festival 2002 and Berlin Poesiefestival 2003).
- Soloist and composer (with Michael Askill) for Meryl Tankard’s “Pearl”, recorded for performances in New York (2001), Chicago (2002) and performed live for the Sydney Opera House 30th birthday celebrations (2003).
- Musical director and performer “This Show is about People” for Shaun Parker, Melbourne Festival 2007, Sydney Festival 2008.
Her performance credits also include many hundreds of school and regional concerts over the past 30 years with Musica Viva in Qld, NSW, SA, NT, Vic and WA, Singapore and Brunei with Mara!, Girls in Your Town and the Humming Birds.
In 2015, Mara will perform a 2-week season with the Mara! group for Premiere Performances in Hong Kong.
Mara has broadcast for ABC (Aust), BBC (UK) and WDR (Germany); for SDR (Germany), Czesky Rozhlas, Shanghai and Hangzhou Radio, and regional radio in France, UK, Singapore and Australia.
Mara has also performed for TV music programs and documentaries made in several countries.
