NAOMI CRELLIN – SATURDAY 18 MAY – 10.30AM

Naomi Crellin (THE IDEA OF NORTH) has been a harmony addict since before she could talk. She is an advocate for the therapeutic benefits singing with others brings, and has dedicated her life to spreading vocal joy the world over.

Join her for an immersive singing experience, working on part-holding, tone and blend and performance of the a cappella medium. Learn a song in four-part harmony and feel the buzz from connecting musically with a like-minded group of people.

 

TONY BACKHOUSE – SATURDAY 3 AUGUST – 10AM

In 1985 Tony founded a cappella quartet the Elevators, and a cappella gospel choir the Café of the Gate of Salvation in1986 where is was director, composer and arranger. In the '90s, he co-founded the Sydney Acappella Association with Stuart Davis which he co-ordinated for five years. 
His gospel quartet Heavenly Light Quartet formed in 1996. Over the years Tony has appeared at WOMADelaide and WOMAD NZ with various groups. He was the recipient of the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America’s 1993 Contemporary A cappella Recording Awards for Best Song and Best Soloist (Runner-up); the Café of the Gate of Salvation received Best Album (Runner-up) Award.

Tony’s workshops focus on the African-American repertoire, spirituals, gospel songs old and new, choral and quartet styles, and often include South African gospel, doo-wop, R&B and pop.

 

MARA KIEK– SATURDAY 19 OCTOBER -2PM

Mara is a specialist in Bulgarian folk singing. After studying with leading American voice scientist Jo Estill, Mara completed her M.App.Sc. by research on the Bulgarian voice. Director and founder of Sydney’s Martenitsa choir, she has run workshops for numerous choirs including the Sydney Children’s Choir, Gondwana Voices, Sing NSW and Wollongong Children’s Choir. She has coached community choirs throughout Australia and has run countless vocal workshops in schools and at festivals in Australia and overseas.

Mara will introduce you to the ‘mystery’ of Bulgarian singing with a focus on how to modify your voice to produce this extraordinary vocal quality safely and effectively. You will learn about the complex rhythms and harmonies at the heart of Balkan traditional music and then you’ll try out your newly acquired skills on a selection of songs from the exquisite Bulgarian choral repertoire.
